Always here for our farmers

Cates was one of the first independent grain and seed companies in Mid Canterbury. We’ve been here for nearly 50 years.   We’ve changed our name to better reflect who we are and how we work with farmers – Cates, New Zealand’s Seed Specialists.

We see ourselves as a success partner for the farming families we work with and we remain fiercely proud of who we are, where we are and the relationships we have built over generations.

Taking local seed to the world

Some of the best seed in the world comes from just down the road. We partner with local farmers and supply their seed to global markets – including Europe, the United Kingdom, America, Canada, Japan and Australia. We also provide onsite crop advice, access to all pasture varieties sold in New Zealand, agrichemical and fertiliser solutions, seed multiplication, and grain and seed brokering.

Everyone we work with knows us by name. Mid-Canterbury is home – our people drive down hundreds of rural driveways every year, and our relationships with farming families have been built over generations. These on-the-ground connections are what makes our international partnerships so strong, as our global customers know we work directly with farmers and provide access to high-quality seed.
